Finding Our Way Home To God

LISTEN TO AUDIO

A man walked into a bar in a foreign country one afternoon and walked out twelve hours later. As he climbed into the back seat of a cab, he suddenly realized he could not remember the name of his hotel – or where it was.

The cab driver turned to him and said, “I cannot take you home if you do not know where you are going.”

Most of us have never been that lost in a foreign place – but many of us have felt lost in life. Deep down, we all long for home – not just a physical place, but a sense of peace, purpose and belonging that this world never quite satisfies. We are sojourners in unfamiliar territory, searching for something we cannot fully name, yet deeply feel.

But finding our way home is not simply about knowing the destination – it’s about trusting the One who leads us there. Left to ourselves, it’s easy to drift, to lose direction, to be pulled off course by the noise and distractions around us. We don’t just need better directions. We need a faithful Guide – someone who knows the way and walks with us.

The good news is that we are not meant to walk this journey alone. God places people in our lives to help us along the way – those who guide us when we feel lost, encourage us when we grow weary and walk beside us through life’s challenges. And, in turn, we are called to do the same for others. We are all walking each other home.

Still, there are forces in this world that can easily lead us astray. At times we all experience moments of being lost – not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. This world throws a lot at us. When that happens, we face a choice: to run toward the Light or retreat into darkness.

Scripture reminds us,“Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1 John 5:5, NIV. At the heart of the Christian faith is the promise that through Jesus Christ we are no longer lost. Through trusting Him, following Him and receiving His grace, our sins are forgiven, our lives are made new and even death is not the end of our story.

Jesus said. “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6, NIV. Jesus is not just a guide – He is the Way home. He doesn’t just point the way – He walks with us, leads us and brings us home. Heaven is not simply a destination – it is home with Him.

The Bible is God’s living Word, revealing His heart and showing us the way home. It reminds us: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV. When life feels uncertain, God's Word is our compass.

The Bible tells us that eternity is real and that we will all spend it somewhere. That truth invites each of us to pause and ask: “Am I headed in the right direction?”

This life, from beginning to end, is part of a much greater divine journey. This world is not our ultimate home. Our true citizenship is in heaven.

We are not in this world by accident. We are here by design – God’s design. And through Christ, we are not wandering aimlessly. We are being led, step by step, toward our eternal home with the Lord.

As Psalm 23 beautifully reminds us, the Lord is our Shepherd – guiding us, restoring us and walking with us even through life’s darkest valleys. We are never alone:

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want, I have everything I need. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet, still, peaceful streams of water. He restores my soul and renews my strength; He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake, bringing honor to Him. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, even the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, I will not be afraid; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff comfort and protect me. You prepare a feast before me in the presence of my enemies; You welcome me as Your honored guest and anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows with Your blessings. Surely Your goodness, Your mercy and Your unfailing love shall pursue me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”  Psalm 23, Amplified

If you’re unsure where you stand, you can begin simply by talking with God. Ask Him to guide you, to reveal Himself to you and to lead you home.

REMEMBER & BELIEVE

Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.

In the meantime, we are all walking together, helping one another, as He leads us home!

QUESTIONS

Where do you believe you are headed right now? Why?

When have you felt spiritually lost? Who helped guide you?

What would it look like for you to trust God more fully with your direction?

PRAYER

Lord, thank You for never leaving us to find our way alone. When we feel lost, remind us that You are near. Lead us out of darkness and into Your light. Guide our steps, strengthen our faith and draw us closer to You each day. Help us not only to find our way home – but to help others along the way.

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil and the evil one. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.

Amen

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24, ESV

God bless you!
