LISTEN TO AUDIO
After their mother and I divorced, sometimes I could hardly talk about my daughters, Erin and Lindsay, without tearing up. I didn’t fully understand why, and many people offered well-meaning but unhelpful advice.
Friends would ask, “What’s wrong with you?” I wasn’t sure. My emotions were tangled in ways I couldn’t explain.
Pastors would suggest, “You’re carrying a lot of guilt and you need to repent of your sin and ask God’s forgiveness and mercy.” I did – many, many times. Yet the tears continued to come.
Then one day, I was talking about it with Bill Crawford, a psychologist. He smiled and said something very simple yet profound, and extremely helpful: “YOU LOVE THEM!”
His words pierced through the fog. Love was at the heart of the matter. “Is it that simple?”, I asked. Love can be the reason for our tears.
Thank you, Bill! And thank You, God!
Sometimes I still tear up when I talk about my precious daughters. But now, when I do, it helps to know why. I LOVE THEM! It really is that simple.
REMEMBER & BELIEVE
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again.
In the meantime, it helps to know why!
QUESTION
Could love be the reason for some of your tears?
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of love. Even when we feel emotionally overwhelmed and we struggle to understand why, You know the reason behind every tear.
Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil and the evil one. For Thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
Amen
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24 (NRSV)
God bless you!
